My Hopes for 1st Time in Malaysia
This November I’m going to travel to Malaysia with a friend of mine for the first time. We plan to stay for two weeks and we’re sooo much looking forward to this journey. I’m sure, unforgettable experiences are waiting for us. It’s the vibrating streets of Kuala Lumpur, beautiful beaches of Langkawi, the lush forests of Borneo and much more. Here I wanna share with you guys some things I hope for and look forward to experiencing.
Convenient Traveling
Even today Malaysia is not one of the countries that comes to your mind first, when thinking about countries developed for tourism. Anyways, friends who were traveling Malaysia last year told me, that it’s quite easy and convenient to get around even for tourists. The reason for that is the well-developed transportation infrastructure and affordable options for going on trips. There are modern trains or buses and even ferries. I think, hoping for smooth journeys through the country is a very realistic thing with road trips full of pretty landscapes and exciting towns.
Having Outdoor Adventures
Malaysias natural beauty is supposedly beyond compare: We’re not only talking about stunning beaches and turquoise waters but also ancient forests and misty mountains. I really hope being able to explore a lot of it. Maybe going for a hike through the jungle, afterwards dipping into the ocean and then just relaxing on the beach - yeah that sounds like an ideal day to me!
Street Food Delights
Always in the mood for food. ^^ I heard that Malaysia is one of the paradises for food lovers like me. The array of culinary delights and flavors must be huuuuge and I hope to have a taste of as many mouthwatering dishes as possible. I picture walking around bustling street markets and exploring the food options given by lots of street vendors. Snacking here, having another food sample there - the culinary variety in Malaysia is waiting for meee, haha. ^^
Modern Cities
In addition to its natural wonders, Malaysia is known for its vibrant cities full of modernity, energy and innovation. I definitely wanna stay in Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days to soak in this brilliant city. Not only to visit for example the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. I also hope to discover Kuala Lumpurs thriving arts, music, and culinary scenes and to visit many markets. I just hope to dive into the cities spirit and stroll around happily and full of excitement.
But because I’m not just an open-minded but also careful person, there are of course also things, that I should keep in mind when traveling to Malaysia for the first time. Here is my “Keep In Mind” list, that I made so far:
1. Be Respectful
Malaysia is a multicultural country with a lot of traditions and customs. Without a doubt it's important to show respect for local beliefs and practices. I think, removing shoes when entering places of worship or dress appropriately if visiting religious sites are some of the basics. Before the trip, I’ll inform myself about other cultural sensitivities or things to be mindful of, so that I’m not doing something wrong, for example when interacting with locals. :) I think, that’s an easy and fair thing to do.
2. The Climate Is Tropical
Malaysia has a tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity throughout the whole year. I do know about myself, that I can handle this kind of climate pretty well. During visits in South Korea and Vietnam during the summer time I experienced these tropical weather conditions and I was able to adapt to that. Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing has always been helpful, also having a small bottle of water with me for staying hydrated, and seeking shade (or air-conditioned cafés ^^) during the hottest hours of the day. I’ll for sure keep that strategy for Malaysia as well.
3. Learning Some Basic Phrases
While English is widely spoken in Malaysia, especially in tourist areas, I think, learning a few basic phrases in Bahasa Malaysia should be a given. It will show some goodwill with locals and can enhance the own travel experience. I’ll definitely memorize at least simple things like hello, thank you and so one.
4. Embrace Cultural Diversity
Malaysias multicultural society is reflected in its cuisine, architecture, and festivals, offering countless experiences for travelers to explore. I wanna keep in mind to be open to learn about the diverse cultures and traditions that coexist harmoniously in Malaysia. There’re many influences like Malay, Chinese, Indian and even indigenous customs and beliefs.
Conclusion
Malaysia is still not as popular to tourists as other countries ranging from Vietnam to Thailand. But I’m sure about the fact that incredible experiences lie ahead. From cultural immersion and culinary delights to natural wonders and warm hospitality - there’s so much to be discovered. If I could, I’d already pack my bags, but well, I’m still a couple of months on the waiting line. xD Anyways, I’m ready to go aboard an unforgettable journey through the lively and captivating cities and landscapes of Malaysia.
