Suwon: Top Reasons to Visit This Gem

Just 30 kilometers south of Seoul, Suwon is a vibrant city that offers a delightful mix of history, culture and modernity. Often overshadowed by its bustling neighbor, Suwon is a destination in its own right, offering a unique blend of traditional charm and contemporary attractions. Mainly curious to see the famous Hwaseong Fortress (화성), I went there conveniently by subway from Seoul, as usualy using my Tmoney Card. :) And here I’ll tell you, why Suwon should be on your traveler’s itinerary, as well.

Historical Riches

Hwaseong Fortress

The crown jewel of Suwon is undoubtedly the Hwaseong Fortress, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the late 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty, this impressive structure encircles the city center and offers a fascinating glimpse into Korea’s historical past. The fortress, with its imposing walls, four main gates and numerous watchtowers, is a marvel of military architecture and urban planning. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the walls, offering panoramic views of the city, or participate in traditional archery lessons at the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, located within the fortress. Just outside the Fortress Wall are many unique café located, where you can relax and watch people strolling along the wall. I walked the Hwaseong Fortress wall, either, and it was so, so beautiful! You really should miss on that.

Hwaseong Haenggung Palace

Near to the fortress, the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace served as a temporary royal residence and a retreat for King Jeongjo. This beautifully restored palace complex is a perfect place to immerse yourself in the regal splendor of the Joseon Dynasty. The palace hosts various cultural performances and traditional ceremonies, making it a living museum that brings Korea’s royal history to life.

Korean Folk Village

A short drive from Suwon, the Korean Folk Village offers an immersive experience into Korea’s cultural heritage. This open-air museum features reconstructed traditional houses, workshops and markets from the Joseon era. The city is also renowned for its culinary delights. Suwon is famous for its galbi (marinated beef ribs), and a visit to one of the many galbi restaurants in the city is a must. The lively food streets and night markets offer a wide array of local delicacies that will tantalize your taste buds. I hoped from one little restaurant to another, as well, and everything was just so delicious! If you’re a foodie like me, Suwon is definitely the right place for you! :)

For nature lovers like me, Gwanggyo Lake Park is a serene escape within the city. The park features beautiful walking trails, picturesque lakes and a variety of recreational facilities. It’s an ideal spot for a unhurried stroll, a family picnic, or simply unwinding amidst nature.

Manseok Park

Manseok Park is another green haven in Suwon, featuring extensive walking and cycling paths, sports facilities and scenic views. The park is particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season, attracting visitors with its stunning floral displays.
