Visit Famous Bukchon Hanok Village
Address: 37, Gyedong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 종로구 계동길 37)
Please Keep In Mind
If you come to visit Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul, keep in mind that this is an actual neighborhood and people have their homes here. Respect their privacy while walking around, don’t make noise and obviously don’t try to get into private hanoks which are not labeled as shops or teahouses. Just be decently respectful, it’s that simple. :)
A Gem Between Skyscrapers
Visting Bukchon Hanok Village is the opportunity for you to experience traditional, old Seoul. These hanoks even date back to the Joseon dynasty. The first time I came here, I almost couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that this cultural heritage of well preserved traditional houses lies betweens the city’s massive skyscapers just like that. At the same time, it’s tucked away between the palaces Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. You could say worlds collide here while the hanoks are the time-bridging connector.
Take a Walk Together
I recommend you to just walk around, enjoy the pretty tiled, colorful roofs, elegant wooden beams, and intricate latticework and explore the unique architectural style that you can find in each hanok. The buzz of the city falls behind and it really feels like you travel back in time to a simpler era.
There’s something else around every narrow corner: Tea houses, art galleries, small souvenir shops, traditional guesthouses and cultural centers, that want to be discovered. You may even want to try out traditional crafts such as pottery, calligraphy, and paper-making. There are many possibilities to immerse into traditional Korean culture. You should definitely try something out.
Ohhh, Those Views <3
It’s always about beautiful views that make my heart pound faster and I can guarantee: You get those in Bukchon Hanok Village. It is located on a hill, so walking around gets a little steep from time to time. (But we’re already used to this in Seoul, right?^^)
But thanks to that location, the village provides picturesque views of Seoul's skyline, framed by the backdrop of N Seoul Tower and the surrounding mountains. Overlooking the city, there are endless stunning photo opportunities.
Many Love It Here
Which makes us come to the photo on this page. Bukchon Hanok Village by no means is an insider tip or something like that. It’s a touristy must-see and it can get even quite crowded from time to time.
Iykyk: To see this street in the picture above as a famous tourist sight without a single touristy soul around is nearly impossible. And no, I didn’t photoshop out everyone. xD It’s also not like crazy early in the morning, but rather during normal day time. The trick here: I (accidentally) visited it during very hot, humid temperatures. I was surprised by that kind of weather on this day, I initially didn’t plan to go to Bukchon Hanok Village (because I’ve been there before) and I just happen to be in that area.
So, as so many times, I just went with my gut, was happy to find it that empty and strolled around. But yeah, I sweat like crazy. That’s why a visit to the next air-conditioned café came shortly after, haha.
