Amidst the lush slopes of Geumjeongsan Mountain (금정산) in Busan, South Korea, lies a place of serenity and spiritual renewal: Beomeosa Temple. I visited the beautiful temple in Busan when I was about to hike Geumjeongsan. I loved walking around the area and to collect my thoughts in this peaceful setting before starting off for the hike.

I remember stepping through the temple gates an being greeted by a sense of calm and tranquility that enveloped the entire area. It was surrounded by lush greens and beautiful buildings. And it didn’t take me long to get there from the center of Busan. Beomeosa Temple offers a peaceful retreat from the business of Busan’s city life, inviting visitors to slow down, unwind, and reconnect with themselves and the natural world.

A Temple With Rich History

Built in 678 AD during the Silla Dynasty, Beomeosa Temple boasts a history that spans over 1 300 years. Can you imagine?! Since then, throughout the centuries, it has served as a center of Buddhist practice and learning, surviving wars, invasions and natural disasters (of course, buildings were destroyed and rebuilt, though) to emerge as one of Korea's most popular cultural landmarks.

Architectural Magnificence

The architecture of Beomeosa Temple is an outstanding example of traditional Korean design, with its intricate wooden structures, colorful paintings and ornate decorations, reflecting the skill and craftsmanship of generations past. From the majestic main building (Daeungjeon (대웅전)) and the graceful three-story stone Pagoda, to the Cheonwangmun Gate (천왕문), gate of the Four Heavenly Kings - these and many more architectural aspects of Beomeosa Temple make this temple so special.
