Gapyeong Series Part 1: Nami Island
Address: 1, Namiseom-gil, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do (경기도 가평군 가평읍 북한강변로 1024)
Just outside of Seoul, you can experience a super nice day tour covering the popular places Nami Island, Petite France and The Garden of Morning Calm. For this, you can easily take the subway from Seoul and hop off Gapyeong Station as your starting point. Arriving at this station, you begin this kinda round trip by getting on the Gapyeong City Tour Bus. It’s very convenient and you can easily hop on and off this bus. At the end of your day, you can just go from Gapyeong subway station back to Seoul. :)
So, this is part one of the Gapyeong series and here you can find out more about Nami Island. Let’s dive in!
Nami Island, also known as Nami Seom (남이섬), is a crescent-shaped island located in the Han River, about 63 kilometers from Seoul. This picturesque island is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists, offering a peaceful retreat and a stunning natural landscape that changes with the seasons. Whether you’re seeking romance, adventure, or a family-friendly outing, Nami Island has something for everyone. I conveniently went there by subways and bus as a nice day trip. :) And here’s why Nami Island should be at the top of your South Korean travel itinerary, as well.
Natural Wonderland
Four Seasons of Beauty
Nami Island is famous for its breathtaking scenery that transforms with each season, offering a unique experience every time you visit. In spring, the island is adorned with cherry blossoms, creating a pastel wonderland. Summer brings lush greenery, perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls. Autumn is arguably the most popular time to visit, as the island’s tree-lined avenues burst into vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow. I also went during autumn and it was just so, so beautiful. In winter, Nami Island becomes a snowy paradise, with its frosted trees and tranquil atmosphere.
Tree-Lined Pathways
One of the island’s most iconic features is its tree-lined pathways. The Metasequoia Lane and the Gingko Tree Lane are particularly famous, providing stunning backdrops for photos and peaceful walks. These picturesque paths are perfect for a romantic stroll or a quiet moment of reflection amidst nature’s beauty.
Cultural Attractions
Naminara Republic
Nami Island is known as the "Naminara Republic" (나미나라공화국), a self-declared micronation that adds a special touch to the island’s charm. I heard, that visitors can even receive some kind of a "passport" upon arrival, and the island features its own flag, stamps and currency. When I visited, I wasn’t aware of this and experienced where you could get this on the island. Anyways, I think this playful concept enhances a sense of adventure and makes a visit even more memorable, so look out for this for yourself. :)
Art and Sculpture
Throughout the island, you’ll find various art installations and sculptures that add to its cultural appeal. The island hosts regular exhibitions, performances and workshops, making it a hub for creativity and artistic expression. Just stroll around and see what installations you stumble upon.
Literary Connections
Nami Island has a rich literary heritage, being the final resting place of the beloved Korean author and illustrator Kang Woo-hyun. The island celebrates literature and the arts through its various museums, galleries and cultural programs, making it a haven for book lovers and creative minds.
Fun for Everyone
Adventure and Activities
Nami Island offers a variety of activities that cater to all ages. Rent a bike and explore the island on two wheels, or take a leisurely boat ride on the Han River. For the more adventurous, there’s zip-lining from the mainland to the island, providing an exhilarating start to your visit. I’ve seen this myself - definitely go for it! The island also features a small theme park, an eco-friendly swimming pool and playgrounds that will keep kids entertained for hours.
Eco-Friendly Initiatives
The island is committed to sustainability and environmental preservation. It boasts eco-friendly facilities, including solar-powered buildings and electric tour buses. Visitors are encouraged to participate in green practices, making Nami Island not only a beautiful destination but also an environmentally conscious one. <3
Culinary Delights
Local Cuisine
No trip to Nami Island is complete without indulging in some delicious Korean cuisine. The island’s restaurants and cafes offer a variety of dishes, from traditional Korean meals to international ones. Be sure to try the Nami Island chicken BBQ, a local specialty that’s perfect for a hearty meal after a day of exploration.
Cozy Cafes
Scattered throughout the island are charming, small cafes where you can relax with a cup of coffee or tea. These cozy spots provide the perfect setting to unwind, enjoy the view and savor the island’s relaxing ambiance.
